Prometheus Can Downgrade iOS 9.3.5 to iOS 9.3.2

When you update your iOS device, you can only downgrade it again if Apple is signing the previous firmware. However, that generally only happens for a week or two at the most after a new version is released and, in the case of iOS 9.3.3, that door has now closed. Apple has released iOS 9.3.4 and iOS 9.3.5 download [ext link] in the last few weeks, and it is now not possible to downgrade back to a jailbreakable firmware via iTunes. As well as that, we no longer have a utility that we can use to help us, especially the 64-bit devices which make up the bulk of the active iOS devices in use today.

We used to use TinyUmbrella [ext link], a neat little utility that allowed us to save our SHSH blobs and downgrade when needed. That tool is not in use at this time but we do have the possibility of a new one in the future. iOS developer and hacker, @tihmstar [Twitter], has uploaded a video that apparently shows an iPhone 5S being downgraded. The utility in use is a partially developed tool called Prometheus and it shows an iPhone 5S with successful Downgrade iOS 9.3.5 to iOS 9.3.2 [ext link] with Prometheus.

The video doesn’t give us a great deal of information about the tool and we don’t know what the requirements are going to be. However, the developer does tell us that it will rely on APTickets, the new version of the SHSH blob, and there will be other conditions as well but the developer has not yet completed work on these or figured them all out. We also don’t have a time frame on when Prometheus will be released as it is still being developed and nobody will know how to use it. @tihmstar also says that it is a very complicated tool and guidance will be needed if or when it is finally released.

If Prometheus does turn out to be a real tool and is released publicly it will be the only tool in the world that assists 64-bit devices in downgrading firmware but, with no firm details to hand, all he can say to you at the moment is, do not update your iOS device or you will lose your jailbreak. iOS 9.3.3 is the latest iOS that can be jailbroken and the next one isn’t expected to be until after iOS 10 is released.
